The June edition of the Unseen Film Club is part of the accompanying programme of Palestine Solidarity Days.

UNSEEN presents an impressive session with four works by Basma al-Sharif, a Palestinian artist working between cinema and installation.

Born in Kuwait in 1983 to Palestinian parents, she grew up in France and the United States, traveling on a US passport. She cannot enter the country of her parents, nor the land where her grandparents live. Her practice looks at cyclical political conflicts and confronts the legacy of colonialism through satirical, immersive, and lyrical works.

We will screen:
"Deep Sleep" – Made while restricted from travel to Gaza. Autohypnosis as a method to bi-locate into multiple places. A year’s worth of sessions recorded onto Super8mm. Movement through ruins of ancient civilizations embedded in modern civilization-in-ruins.

"O, Persecuted" – Restoring Kassem Hawal’s 1974 Palestinian Militant film Our Small Houses into a performance possible only through film. Speed, bodies, past moving into a future that collides ideology with escapism.

"We Began By Measuring Distance" – Long still frames, text, sound. An anonymous group measures distance. Innocent measurements turn political. An ultimate disenchantment with facts when the visual fails to communicate the tragic.

"Capital "– Egypt sinks into poverty and debt. New cities rise. Prisons fill. A ventriloquist, songs, advertisements describe a bygone fascism. Satire as the only safe language.

Czerwcowa odsłona Klubu Filmowego Unseen jest wydarzeniem towarzyszącym Palestine Solidarity Days.

Zapraszamy na wyjątkowy pokaz czterech prac Basmy al-Sharif, palestyńskiej artystki tworzącej na pograniczu kina i instalacji.

Basma al-Sharif (ur. 1983 Kuwejt) w palestyńskiej rodzinie, dorastała we Francji i Stanach Zjednoczonych, podróżując na amerykańskim paszporcie. Nie może wjechać do kraju swoich rodziców ani na ziemię, gdzie mieszkają jej dziadkowie. Jej twórczość przygląda się cyklicznym konfliktom politycznym i mierzy się ze spuścizną kolonializmu poprzez satyryczne, immersyjne i liryczne realizacje. 

W ramach UNSEEN zaprezentujemy:
"Deep Sleep" (Super 8, 12:45) – Nakręcony w czasie zakazu podróżowania do Strefy Gazy. Autohipnoza jako metoda bilokacji. Rok sesji nagranych na taśmie Super8. Podróż przez ruiny starożytnych cywilizacji wpleciony w nowoczesną cywilizację w ruinie. 

"O, Persecuted" (16mm + archiwalia, 11:38) – Poprzez reinterpretację palestyńskiego filmu Our Small Houses (1974) Kassema Hawala, artystka tworzy performans możliwy wyłącznie w języku filmu. Prędkość, cielesność i przeszłość przechodzą w przyszłość, przenikają się z przyszłością, w której ideologia zderza się z eskapizmem. 

"We Began By Measuring Distance" (1 2 3) (SD video, 19') – Długie nieruchome kadry, tekst, dźwięk. Anonimowa grupa mierzy dystans. Niewinne pomiary stają się komentarzem politycznym. To wyraz głębokiego zwątpienia w fakty, gdy obraz okazuje się niewystarczający, by oddać wymiar tragedii. 

"Capital" (HD video, 17:05) – Egipt tonie w biedzie i długach. Rosną nowe miasta. Więzienia się zapełniają. Brzuchomówca, piosenki, reklamy które opisują minioną erę faszyzmu. Satyra jako jedyny bezpieczny język.

„Nie zdecydowałam reprezentować nikogo poza sobą, choć to ‚ja’ jest pełne pamięci zbiorowej.”
